Pleased to meet you!
Greetings to all of you in cyberspace! I wanted to take a moment and introduce myself.
My real name is Laura McGaughey and I was born in a suburb of Louisville, Ky. I earned the moniker Spunky in my adolescent years because I had an unmatched tenacity and uniqueness that made me stand out in my small-town community.
I was always a creative type, particularly in writing and music, winning awards including placing third in my state’s academic league’s writing competition. I went on to study a range of subjects in adulthood, including writing, anthropology, medicine and public relations.
After completing an internship in Boulder, I studied abroad in Kyoto, Japan, and ultimately returned to Colorado to permanently live and work in Denver.
My past work experience has been in both the nonprofit and corporate sectors, performing administrative and marketing/PR duties in the health care, IT, and music and arts industries. I am also a published freelance writer and photographer.
Spunky PR and Spunky Scribbles are my brand identities for my freelance services as a publicist and writer. Public relations, journalism and connecting with the media has all changed rapidly in our online generation. I have been blessed to work in myriad ways in these fields, particularly in the Colorado music scene. I was the resident writer and publicist at the esteemed music venue and school, Swallow Hill; I was the manager and publicist of the popular Denver-based funk/hip hop/rock band, U.S. Pipe; and I am a published music writer, having written cover stories and features in the monthly Colorado Bluegrass Music Society publication, Pow’r Pickin’, as well as for the monthly Colorado Music Buzz magazine. You can read these articles and reviews here.
My desire with Spunky PR is to help DIY nonprofits, artists and musicians, and small business owners figure out how to promote themselves through new social media, great marketing and promotional collateral, using online tools and analytics, and by pitching media, industry peers and the public at large to build a strong, enduring brand that connects authentically and “sticks.”
We live in a society that has been oversaturated by traditional marketing and advertising. The increase in mobile and social media technologies is more than ever being driven by the end user. That means that, more than ever, they’re able to tune out the deluge of what has traditionally been used to market to them. My approach is to be genuine and consistent in your messaging and methods.
As a writer, Spunky Scribbles was established to do what I admittedly love most: write. I’ve produced a great breadth of writing over my life, from poetry to press releases, from articles and reviews to grant applications. Words have been my friend for a long time and I’ve mastered every aspect of writing put forth to me. I aspire to continue to grow as a writer and am happy to offer writing, proofreading and editing services for any type of business or organization.
I’m looking forward to 2010 and hearing from you if you’re in need of my services. You can also connect with me on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Happy New Year!
